women manicure
Christine turned down my latest invitation for coffee and scones at the corner cafe. Her husband John was seriously ill and she wanted to stay home in case he needed anything. Even though they employed a health aide, he was bed-bound, sleeping much of the time and as a consequence, she was house-bound.
Pleas for her to take a break coming from well-meaning friends fell on deaf ears, as she was determined to be there for her husband in sickness as she had in health. Stories about the stress of caregiving and earnest conversations to take care of herself were listened to and politely dismissed.
Yet he sleeps most of the time, a friend observed. The inspiration struck…If Christine won’t come out, we can go in!
We got her address book and started booking dates. Two friends could come once a week to watch a movie with her and bring popcorn. Some church members offered to bring her copies of the last Sunday’s sermons and have Coke & cookies once a week. I saw a little box in a hobby store that contained instructions and materials for the art of nail painting. We gave each other manicure one day. There are many craft kits that contain instructions and enough materials for 2 or 3 people for about $15 each.
Friends and acquaintances who knew Chris and John booked time and with plenty of opportunities no one felt too stressed. Spreading the activities out lessened the burden on Christine. As caregiver, she was cared for, without leaving her home. Not an ideal situation, but a good compromise for a time!
