18 Fearless Years

Gary Barg - Editor-in-chiefSchizophrenia Support

Many years ago, when I was in high school, I remember spending a good deal of time with my uncle, Mike, in his apartment, assuring him that he was not being spied on by the neighbors and that the mailman was not “out to get him.”  You see, Uncle Mike was diagnosed with schizophrenia after his medical discharge from the Army in the late sixties.

Mike lived with us for a while and I remember Mom spending many days with him at the Miami VA hospital. A few years after I left for college, Uncle Mike disappeared from Miami, surfacing only occasionally to call his dad (my grandfather) to have money wired to him. I bring this up because I also remember that it was extremely frustrating to feel that we were all alone and had no one to share our concerns with as caregivers of a loved one living with schizophrenia.

If you are also caring for a family member, loved one or friend living with schizophrenia, there’s a new option you may want to consider – a private online community for people with loved ones living with schizophrenia. This confidential Web site was established to provide schizophrenia caregivers with the ability to come together to share their experiences and needs as well as learn from one another. Our friends at Communispace, an award-winning research agency, in partnership with a leading pharmaceutical company, have created the community and I have to say that I wish it were available when we were caring for Mike.

This is a place where your voice can be heard, you can feel comfortable that your fellow schizophrenia caregivers are in the room with you, and your questions and comments will be understood, respected and even responded to by people who really know what you are going through. In fact, your honest, unbiased feedback can actually help inspire new caregiver support programs.

Take a moment to fill out this confidential Quick Survey to see if you qualify for membership to this 24/7, password-protected community Web site.
As with all family caregiving, you don’t need to go it alone.
