How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?
When I found my 88 years old mother in her bedroom face down, still responsive but had fractured her knee in two places. I found out she had Alzheimer's then I was introduced to adult diapers that was when reality set in that my life was about to change to become a caregiver.
Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?
No I'm the primary caregiver of my mom along with my son who assists me and supports me.
What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?
The hardest thing is watching your loved ones go from one dimension of their lives to another. The great reward is that I still have my mom here with me and enjoy every moment that I spend with her.
What advice would you give to other caregivers?
Taking time for themselves and interact with other people in support groups. See your doctor. Regular communication with family and friends.
In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?
Accountable, responsible, caring, humble, patient and supportive.
Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?
As I learn more about my mom who is living with Alzheimer to take more time with your loved ones. Educate yourself on the illness and get involved. In 2015 I begin an caregiver's support group called Coffee Tea & Me Caregivers as caregivers must unite and support each other.
