How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?
My mom passed away in 2014 the same year I donated a kidney to my dad. I took over his care as his healthcare.
Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?
My dad has always been my hero, he always made sure I was safe and taken care of, now it is my turn to take care of him. We have a loving relationship and he knows I am his number 1 advocate.
What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?
The hardest is watching your loved one suffering and the resources are limited. At times the caregiver world can feel isolated and lonely because you feel no one understands. The most rewarding is watching how you helped your loved one.
What advice would you give to other caregivers?
You are not alone, use the available resources, join support groups, it may seem like help is not available but if never give up. While advocating for your loved one, take time to advocate for yourself.
In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?
Always be kind and have patience.
Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?
During transplant testing/prep the odds were stacking up against us, our Faith in God and perseverance got us to the finish line. At time doctor appointments and diagnosis can be scary, it is important to just not let the fear take over.
