- Love Always Trumps Hate. After all, the phrase is “You never forget your first love”, not “you never forget your first hate.”
- Think of something that makes you smile. Repeat at least ten times a day.
- Tell the people you love that you love them- right now. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
- Replace every memory that you beat yourself up over - with one that you pat yourself on the back over. Keep doing this until it sticks.
- Learn something new every single day: A word. A phrase. A factoid. A country capital. It doesn’t matter what it is, just learn something.
- I am pleased that now as a senior curmudgeon, I’m able to use a few of my favorite words without everyone’s eyebrows raising: Groovy, Poppycock, Phony Baloney and Wowie Kazowiee.
- A phrase for the times in which we live (to be said after taking a long and deep breath) “And this too shall pass.” Because, if living in (at least parts of) eight decades has taught me anything: “It certainly shall.”
- Please help a family caregiver. They probably won’t ask for your help, but definitely do need it. Don’t ask them if you can help. Tell them what you can do.
- Take a hint from the youngest and the oldest of us and don’t forget to take your naps.
- And finally, a list of four-letter words to include in your vocabulary as often as possible: love, care, kiss, hugs and (of course) dogs.
With a nod to Sir Paul: “Will you still need me, will you still feed me, When I'm sixty-four?”
