How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?
In 2012 my husband was diagnosed with breast cancer which progressed after treatment to stage 4. He has battled two other cancers.
Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?
We have grown closer and have a stronger relationship. Cancer either tears couples apart or brings them closer. We appreciate each day we have together and view extra time as a gift.
What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?
Hardest thing: Watching cancer Rob my husband of previous life. Rewarding: To successfully bring needed attention to male breast cancer at national research conferences.
What advice would you give to other caregivers?
Be an advocate and help learn as much as you can about the disease. Get second opinion at major cancer center if possible.
In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?
Not to sweat the small stuff. Support decisions even if you disagree.
Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?
Fighting for men to be included in breast cancer clinical trials & being addressed in research.
