How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?
Dad and mom had been married 55 years when I realized something was different. One day I received a frantic call from my folks church saying they were at the zoo and had lost my father. This adventure confirmed my suspicions. Dad had Alzheimer’s.
Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?
They have all three passed now, but all of those years of caregiving created some stress and resentment for all of us.
What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?
Remembering to take good care of yourself first, so you can take better care of your loved one. The most rewarding thing is knowing that you are helping to make a positive difference in the life of your loved one and they are enhancing your life as well.
What advice would you give to other caregivers?
Always remember to care for yourself first. Put your oxygen on first before assisting those around you! You can't help them if you aren't breathing, too!
In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?
To be flexible, resilient, patient, gracious and grateful.
