Fearless Caregiver Profile: Paula Baughman

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

My Mom and Aunt needed help taking care of their dad.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

Yes, I never really had a close relationship with my grandpa. Growing up he was never around.  Now, I know about his childhood and his time in the Vietnam War. My grandpa was an ambulance driver and we joke about maybe that is the reason, I am a first responder.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

The hardest is not getting overwhelmed and taking things to heart when they get upset about someone having to help them.  The most rewarding a closer relationship with your loved one.

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Take time to really listen to their stories of life.  It provides so much insight to who they are.

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

To have Love, Respect, and Empathy

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

It has taught me to really listen, a lot of time people are afraid to ask for help.  Through this experience, it has made me listen more closely to peoples needs which in turn helps me to help others.
