Fearless Caregiver Profile: Nancy McLees

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

My husband was diagnosed with dementia back in 2015. We are married and I live him. It is so sad because he is not them same brilliant man I married.  I am wanting to move us to Ohio to be by my family for support.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

Yes. His brain cannot process things like before. I have to help him dress as he doesn't know where his clothes are. He doesn't know where anything is, like his deodorant, his socks even shoes. He still showers and tries to shave his face with his razor.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

The hardest thing is to have to repeat myself constantly. The rewarding thing is that he usually does what I ask and is never mean to me.

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Have someone relieve you. In order to give you a break. Just ask.

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

Patience

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

Since he cant make up his mind, I sometimes just make decisions for him
