Fearless Caregiver Profile: Kim Newland

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

When my step mother passed, I brought my dad to Florida. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s shortly after that.  We moved in with my mom, but this was too much for her, so I got a place for my dad and I to live.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

It’s been a blessing having this extra time with him, but it’s very challenging because I’m doing this all on my own. My Christian faith is sustaining me, but it’s getting harder and harder. It’s starting to cause physical problems.  Needing support ❤️

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

Hardest: doing this alone/rewarding: one on one time with my dad who is my hero.

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Take time for yourself.

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

Doing God's will gives me joy and peace🙏

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

Just being willing to reach out for help. I was pleasantly surprised at how many resources are available to help.
