Fearless Caregiver Profile: Kathy Batt

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

Proximity to my parents and immediate need to help them out peri-COVID when it seemed as though they were struggling.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

I am truly close to both of my parents and I know I’ve made both of their quality of life a little better by being there for them.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

To see them struggle. I’m learning to accept where they are in their journey–with difficulty

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Definitely make time for yourself. Remember to reach out and engage with your peers to be reminded that you are still in the middle of living your life!

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

Patience; acceptance; the reality of our mortality

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

I’ve helped my parents relationship improve by activating my dad’s long-term care plan and getting him the regular help he needs. It’s allowed my parents to maintain their own lives and not have or sucked up by caregiving!
