Fearless Caregiver Profile: DACIA JOHNSON

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

My mom currently has primary progressive multiple sclerosis. I moved in with her about 9 years ago because she broke her foot and could not get around easily. Her health continued to decline, I am still caring for my mother 9 years later.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

I have developed a since of compassion I didn't think I had.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

Not having outside help. The most rewarding thing is knowing my mom is at home safe and with people who love her.

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Can't do it alone. Use your support system, if there is no support system create one.

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

Live 1 day at a time.

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

My night nurse didn't show up and I was up for 7 days straight day and night taking care of my mother until someone relieved me.
