Fearless Caregiver Profile: Alicia Story

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

My husband and I moved in to care for my father. He was dehydrated to the point of seizures and not eating well. I am now his full time caregiver with the strong support of my husband and my sister.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

It has strengthened our relationship. It’s difficult to explain, but he trusts that I will always be there for him.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

The hardest thing about being my father’s full time caregiver is not being able to come and go as I please. I’m fortunate to have the full support of my husband and my sister. The most rewarding thing is watching his quality of life improve.

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Utilize all the help and resources you can find. It takes a lot of patience and dedication to care for an elderly parent, but if you seek help you can do the job well.

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

I’m stronger than I ever thought I could be..

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

Somewhat early in my caregiving role, my father had a very difficult night with gastrointestinal problems. We both learned a lot about each other that night and we got through it together. I think that’s when he knew I would always be there for him.
