How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

My mom collapse at home one evening after suffering a diabetic episode. We rush her to the doctor who told her that she could no longer live alone. In 24 hours, we packed up a majority of things, and she moved in with me for the next 4 years.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

It's strange going from being the adult child your parent raised to being somewhat like the parent of your aging loved one.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

The hardest part about being a caregiver in placing your life and dreams on hold, but the most rewarding part is your loved one knowing that they can count on you, and that you will do whatever you can to help them manage this stage of their lives.

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Find ways to take sanity breaks. My brother and his wife agreed to host my mom at their home every other weekend for 4 years. I looked forward to those weekend respites like some kids look forward to going to Disneyland. 

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

Our time on earth is limited. Give love. Receive love.

I truly felt like an adult the day that my younger brother and I made the difficult decision to place our mother in assisted living. After taking turns for 4 years managing her care, we discovered that she needed around the clock assistance that we could
