Fearless Caregiver Profile: TENA SCALLAN

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

I was born a caregiver, with a sister that was very sick. Then at the age of 10  I cared for my mother with a bad liver. I’m running my own caregiving company to care for my father-in- law with Alzheimer's.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

Caring for a loved one is a pleasure. You are raised by your parents with love and it comes full circle to do the same for them.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

The hardest is to take your loved ones independence away and the most rewarding is to give them the love they gave you.

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Patience and gratitude go a long way.

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

To be a compassionate, patient person with tons of gratitude.

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

Learning to understand Alzheimer's help me teach others.
