Fearless Caregiver Profile: MICHELE POTTER

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

Make that "ones." My dad had a stroke, mom had cancer and Ramsey Hunt syndrome and then my husband had a stroke.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

Yes. I put my empathy hat on everyday. It gives me more patience with them and I love them even more for their determination.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

The hardest is balance...finding the time and energy to do for everyone and take care of yourself also. The most rewarding is knowing that you've helped them cope with the reality of the disabilities and to thrive despite them.

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

Take care of yourself, learn to say no (it's ok) and cultivate empathy. I would also advise caregivers to make a list of things YOU need to help you help others. Then when people ask what they can do to help, you have your go-to list.

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

I can endure only through the strength of Jehovah God.

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

I "McGyvered" every machine my husband needed, enabling him to carry out his responsibilities of grass mowing, snow plowing and leaf blowing with one hand. Now I can sit back and take pictures of him fearlessly carrying on!
