Fearless Caregiver Profile: CINDY WOLKE

How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?

My mom got the courage to leave an abusive marriage after 30 years. Two days after she moved in with me, she had the first of what would become many strokes.

Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?

My mom was always the one to take care of me. Growing up with a disability was hard and she was always my champion, never letting me take no for an answer. Now it’s my turn to be her champion.

What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?

The hardest is seeing her unhappy at times and the best is being able to help her and bring her some peace and happiness

What advice would you give to other caregivers?

You know your loved one best. Do not be afraid to speak up and advocate for their needs. If you think something is wrong, ask questions and keep asking them until you get an answer that helps.

In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?

To have a voice. To not be afraid

Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?

My mom has many health problems and we struggled for a long time to find the right doctors. If I had not kept pushing and advocating, my mom would not be doing as well as she is today. I was always afraid to speak up but not anymore.
