How did you become the caregiver for your loved one?
My son tried to commit suicide, later diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic.
Has your relationship changed with the loved one that you are caring for? If so how?
Yes, our relationship has changed, I am more open to problems, crisis, backup plans.
What is the hardest thing about being a caregiver and the most rewarding thing?
Hardest thing is putting myself last, my son comes first. the most rewarding thing is he is the most lovable person i know, respectful, kind, tolerant heart of gold.
What advice would you give to other caregivers?
Hang in there, focus on the good, enjoy every moment. Learn from the bad experiences.
In ten words or less, what has caregiving taught you?
Patience, understanding, kindness.
Describe a situation where being a Fearless Caregiver helped you succeed?
Last year due to a medical emergency, my son was operated on and given a colostomy. I had to deal with that until he got his reversal in December. You just take one day at a time, and if that is too long you take one hour at a time.
