Before a Health Crisis Forces the Conversation
There’s a moment many caregivers remember clearly. It doesn’t begin with paperwork. It begins with a phone call. A fall. A diagnosis. A sudden shift that changes everything. And almost immediately, the questions begin:
- Where are the insurance papers?
- What would Mom want?
- Can anyone access her accounts?
In those moments, families aren’t just dealing with a health issue. They’re navigating confusion, stress—and too often—conflict. And this is where preparation changes everything
Why Sooner Matters More
Most families delay these conversations because they feel uncomfortable. We tell ourselves, We’ll get to it. But caregivers know something others don’t: Life doesn’t wait for us to be ready.
When documents aren’t in place and when decisions are delayed.
Emotions take over.
- Families disagree
- Care suffers
When they are in place:
- Families have a roadmap to follow
- Families can demand (request) more from service providers
- Family can understand the loved ones wishes and speak for them
- Care teams move faster
- Families feel grounded
I am blessed to have met thousands of caregivers at the over 300+ Fearless Caregiver Conferences, and at each event, we ask caregivers to share their wisdom with other in the audience.
We were in the middle of this exact conversation at a Nashville Fearless Caregiver Event, when a lady walked up to the mic and shared this memorable story. Her long-term boyfriend had an illness that caused him to need frequent medical care.
On one occasion, she called for the ambulance, informed the ambulance driver to take him to the ER at his chosen hospital. When she arrived, she found out her boyfriend was delivered to another hospital. Arriving at the new hospital, she found out that the ER was preparing to run a large battery of unnecessary tests. This is when over 600 people in attendance learned about her hard won wisdom. In the most theatrical manner, the caregiver shared the following with the audience.
She marched up to the head nurse and explained that she did not want these tests to be run and that she had a copy of the most recent medical visit. The nurse at the hospital told her that she had to take a seat (or as she felt – to sit in time-out) The nurse started to explain that she could not discuss her boyfriend's case due to HIPPA laws. (Here is where the theatrics came into play) The caregiver reached into her purse and whipped out a HIPPA Authorization form. The nurse followed up with the fact that they were not married and she cannot speak for him. This is where she reached into her purse and pulled out the Healthcare Power of Attorney Document.
The doctor was called - the one shot he needed was provided to her boyfriend - they went home.
These documents are about protecting your loved one—and your family—from avoidable hardship.
The Essential Documents Every Family Should Have include:
- Healthcare Power of Attorney
- Living Will (Advance Directive)
- HIPAA Authorization
- Durable Power of Attorney (Financial)
- Will or Estate Plan
- Insurance and medical information summary
- Digital access and account information
These aren’t just legal documents.
- They are clarity.
- They are direction.
- They are peace of mind—when peace feels hard to find.
Most importantly, I encourage everyone to speak with a board certified Elder Attorney to define the exact documents that match your needs. Elder Attorney are specialists in helping family caregivers.
Preparation isn’t about planning for someday. It’s about protecting your family from unnecessary stress today.
