Honoring Gary Barg’s Legacy at Caregiver.com
A Brother’s Journey
When my brother Gary and I first sat down more than 30 years ago to talk about the care for our grandfather and then quickly the care for our dad, the world looked very different. Few people even used the word “caregiver.” Most considered the word was related to a mother caring for their child.
Gary saw this gap clearly. He had a gift for listening, for spotting the invisible heroes among us, and for shining a light where others hadn’t looked before. Out of that vision came Today’s Caregiver magazine and Caregiver.com—the very first publication and digital platform created specifically for family caregivers.
Gary’s Legacy
Over the decades, Gary built more than a magazine. He created a movement. Today’s Caregiver didn’t just offer tips or resources; it became a mirror where caregivers could see themselves and share what they had learned. Gary made sure that in every issue, and at every Fearless Caregiver Conference, caregivers knew: You matter. You are not invisible. Your voice deserves to be heard.
One of Gary’s most powerful strategies was to invite celebrity caregivers to share their personal stories. The late actor Robert Urich was an early Today’s Caregiver magazine cover interview. He was also the first keynote speaker of, what became hundreds, of Fearless Caregiver Conferences across the county. An event created to share wisdom between family caregivers. To date, over 300 Fearless Caregiver Conferences have been held in more than 27 states.
Actress Debbie Reynolds also shared her story of caregiving with Gary. She spoke about the challenges of balancing caregiving with her career and the healing power of humor. Ms. Reynolds cover story was not only deeply personal it led to her keynoting a few Fearless Caregiver Conferences.
Many others have followed her example including Henry Winkler, Actress, minister, activist Della Reese, Actor and social worker Clay Aiken, from American Idol fame, TV Personality and Alzheimer’s Activist Leeza Gibbons, Songwriter and Singer Clay Walker and two US Department of Aging Secretaries and dozens of federal and state representatives. Their stories validated caregivers everywhere, showing that everyone is equal in caregiving and face the same exhaustion, fear, and love.
Losing Gary, Finding Strength
When Gary passed away last year, I lost not just my brother and business partner, but the daily source of inspiration who fueled this work. His voice echoed in every editorial decision, every conversation with a caregiver, every conference keynote. The hole he left is immense—for me personally, for our family, and for the caregiving community he loved so deeply.
But grief also carries with it an invitation: to carry the torch. To honor the work of those who came before by ensuring the mission continues. Gary’s vision is far too important to fade. Millions of caregivers still need recognition, education, and connection.
And so, it is my privilege and responsibility to step more fully into this role—to serve as the new voice of Caregiver.com and Today’s Caregiver magazine.
Looking Forward: Caregiving
Caregiving has changed since Gary and I started this journey. Today, there are more than 63 million family caregivers in the United States alone. The aging population is growing, chronic illnesses are more prevalent and healthcare systems are increasingly complex. Caregivers are not just family helpers—they are the backbone of our healthcare system.
And yet, many caregivers still feel invisible. They still struggle with isolation, burnout, and the overwhelming responsibilities of care. They still sacrifice their own needs and health for their loved ones.
That’s why our mission remains urgent. We will continue to create resources, tell stories, and provide practical tools that help caregivers not just survive, but thrive. We will expand conversations about self-care, family decision-making, elder mediation, and community support. And we will make sure every caregiver knows: you are not alone.
A Promise to Caregivers
- We will honor the past. Gary’s legacy will always be the foundation of Caregiver.com. His vision of fearless, compassionate caregiving will remain at the heart of everything we do.
- We will expand education. From practical caregiving tips to resources on mediation, decision-making, and resilience, our content will grow with caregivers’ needs.
- We will strengthen community. Caregiving should never be a solitary journey. Through conferences, online platforms, and shared stories, we will continue connecting caregivers to one another.
- We will advocate for visibility. Caregivers are the silent strength of families and communities. We will keep pushing until their contributions are recognized and valued.
Closing Thoughts
Carrying on Gary’s work is both a challenge and an honor. Every caregiver I meet, every story I hear, reminds me why this mission matters. Gary’s legacy lives on in every family that finds hope in our pages, in every conference attendee who discovers strength, and in every caregiver who finally feels seen.
So together, let us continue this journey. Let us be fearless, compassionate, and full of hope. For Gary. For every caregiver. And for the generations yet to come who will walk this path of love.
