Getting My Kicks

Won't you get hip to this timely tip

When you make that California trip

Get your kicks on Route Sixty-Six

Nat King Cole

My personal route 66 starts today (and I hope at some time this year, it will actually include California).

The speed of my annual trip around the sun seems to increase exponentially each year.

As a kid, I remember how very long it was from the beginning of the school year to the final bell signaling the start of that year’s summer break.

When in junior high school, I remember having a conversation with friends about a relative who just turned 21. That seemed so very ancient to us, “who could ever be that old?”  Now, I barely remember being 21.

These years do seem to be flying by, as if I was in a corvette convertible with the top down watching the blur of the trees by the side of the road while traversing the proverbial Route 66 of song and television show fame.

I realize that this phenomenon is simply the nature of the length of my time on this good earth. I also realize that as these years speed by, the most important thing to make this part of the journey so very pleasant is having people for whom to care. From spouse, to mother, to siblings and cousins, nieces, great-nieces, friends and colleagues.

In fact, one of the things that has made these past 27 years since creating caregiver.com, Today’s Caregiver magazine and the Fearless Caregiver Conferences so blessed for me, is you – and all the other family and professional caregivers we’ve met along the way.  We look forward to being in the room with you once again as we restart the in-person Fearless Caregiver Conferences (fingers crossed!).

You are truly the gift that keeps on giving (pun intended) and I love you all.
