The Caregiver Curmudgeon’s Handy Hints for any Age

by

It's that time of year again to hear from my crankier alter-ego.  I know he's been missed.

Here we go again...

  1. Learn about the power of silence in a conversation instead of always thinking about the next thing you want to say.  You may actually learn something.
  2. Stop yourself before sharing gossip, distasteful jokes or mean comments. Well after people forget what you said, they will remember how it made them feel.
  3. Learn how to balance your bank account, even if your bank’s online system does it for you. Controlling your money is immensely empowering at any age.
  4. Learn about the Dewey Decimal system.  Not only for the off chance that Siri and Google search may be unavailable to you one day, but also to learn the why behind the how to find any information you may need.
  5. Learn how to read a map. (See rational above).
  6. Learn basic first aid.  Do I really have to explain this one?
  7. Spend time with your senior loved ones asking them about their lives. You will be astounded how it can enhance your understanding of your own life and besides it’s the right thing to do.
  8. Take a civics class.  No matter on what side of the political equation you fall, you might as well know if those who are seeking to inform you have the correct information about how your government works.
  9. Learn the power of counting to ten before reacting to any perceived slight or negative information.  It helps you respond in ways you won’t regret later.
  10. Learn about the power of a well-timed nap. Something every 2-year-old already knows and which I will now gladly be partaking.

Please feel free to add any hints of your own!
