Citizen You

by

Recently I spent the day with three thousand newly minted Americans, relearning the power of what we so easily take for granted - our citizenship. The event was the swearing in ceremony at the Miami Beach Convention Center and these new citizens hail from such divergent countries as Ireland, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Philippines. What these three thousand had in common was the fervent belief that their lives would be better and opportunities greater by raising their right hand and pledging allegiance to become the nation’s newest citizens

What this occasion brought home to me was the extraordinary value to being a member of a participatory government. Regardless of recent election debates, our most valuable right to vote is one that family caregivers need to take extremely seriously. While your vote is certainly important, your educated selection of candidates is of primary importance.

Watch this year's debate not as a spectator in a public relations battle but as an educated consumer. Wade through the blather and bile heaped up on our airways by their campaigns and conduct.  And then do your own research to find the truth.

Where do the candidates stand on drug prices, caregiver relief and Medicare?

Do their words match their records and positions?

Are they committed to fight for us as we care for our loved ones?

I am not writing this to advocate for any candidate but if you are asking yourself, “Hey why is he picking on my candidate?” Maybe it is time for you to reconsider why you picked him.

Vote intelligently, but vote.
