Gary Barg - Editor-in-chief The Power of Like

Way back in the Stone Age of communication (about 22 years ago), I am not too proud to say that I was one of those people who railed against some aspects of the communication tidal wave of progress that was about hit our shores. It was an innocuous enough moment, but one that I have yet to live down all these years later. I remember it vividly. I was talking with my partners in the offices of our video production company. Seemingly, every person we had ever known had started selling these new-fangled devices called fax machines. We were promised that if we bought one of their thousand dollar fax machines, we would be able to send a document from one location to another in around three minutes! The unfortunate phrase I uttered, which has stuck with me ever since was, “I can’t understand why we need to spend so much money to get something into our hands that fast. After all, there is FedEx and that should be fast enough.”

The reason I bring up this ancient history lesson is that since then, I have fully embraced the opportunity to enhance communication with family and professional caregivers. In fact, caregiver.com is one of the first 100,000 registered Internet addresses in existence. I remember having to use an ancient device called a landline telephone to call and reserve the name since URLs couldn’t be purchased on-line yet. I do believe every communication method has its own unique purpose. Today’s Caregiver magazine allows for time to create longer and deeply researched articles of interest to caregivers. Our weekly email newsletters allow for quicker access to the latest news or wisdom from the attendees at the most recent Fearless Caregiver Conference and Facebook and Twitter allow for short topic-specific advice and interaction. All of these communication methods allow us to be able to create a more effective way to share information, advice and even much needed humor with our readers, visitors, Pinteresters and even Tweeters.

That brings me to the purpose for this email.  At last month’s Fearless Caregiver Conference, some of the audience was interacting with us about recent Facebook posts and others didn’t know what we were talking about.  So, I would like to ask you in my best Sally Fields award recipient impersonation (you younger folks look it up) to “like” us, really “like” us on facebook so we can continue the conversation that we start in these newsletters, the magazines and at the Fearless Caregiver Conferences.

By the way, back in the Neolithic period of communication (the early 80s), I couldn’t understand why anyone would need a computer for anything more than playing Pong.  There! I got that off my chest.
