I would greatly appreciate
it if you can tell me if there are any
government or non-government agencies that
provide any financial help for caregivers. I
am a single 54-year-old male who is
unemployed and without any income at all or
health insurance. I am also a caregiver for
my 87-year-old father who lives with me and
had throat cancer and heart surgery. My
father has health insurance, Medicare and
his Social Security. In my search for help,
there are services for my father, but none
for me. Thank you for any information.

I work for an ADRC (Aging and Disability Resource Center) and do SHICK counseling. What I see many people in this man's situation doing is investigating the HCBS-FE in-home care program that might pay the son for caring for his father. And the new option for getting health insurance coming in October for those uninsured or underinsured (commonly referred to as ObamaCare) might be an answer to his insurance issues. He needs to contact his local AAA or DCF and the SHICK counselor in his area. Sorry about all the acronyms - they are a necessary but confusing fact of life.
