The Circle of Life

I tell the story about being on the phone extension years ago when my mom was having a conversation with a distant male relative about her care for my grandmother. I was shocked (but not surprised) by his flippant disregard about what family caregivers provide for their loved ones.  I may have also been a tad bit flippant in my response to his cold commentary about family caregiving.  I reminded him that not only do little pitchers have big ears, but big eyes as well, and to be careful about what example his attitude sets for his own children, who may be equally as dismissive to him when faced with the possibility of being his caregivers sometime in the future.

Along these lines, I would like to share an email I received from Marie:

I, too, have a story to share.  Today is 19 years since my mother died.  She was 94 years old...continued

Helping From Far Away

By Kate Shuman

Because Americans have become such a transient culture, adult children are now finding themselves having to deal with an ever-growing crisis: taking on the new-found role as long-distance caregiver. A recent study on long-distance caregiving showed that the out-of-pocket expense of caring for an elderly or physically challenged loved one who lives more than an hour away has doubled since 1997...continued

Wake Up and Fight Parkinson's with Exercise

By: Jackie Russell, RN

Parkinsonís disease (PD) remains, for the most part, a mystery of medical science.  For reasons unknown, certain brain cells stop producing a substance called dopamine.  The lack of dopamine affects an individualís movement, strength and balance.  PD causes a slow, yet progressive deterioration in function, taking many years to run its course.  When the diagnosis of PD is made, you experience a life-altering event...continued

Caring For The Caregiver

Being a caregiver is a stressful and demanding job. There is usually very little, if any opportunity to prepare for a new caregiving situation. The well-being of the caregiver requires priority consideration. Thought must be given to the fate of the care recipient if the caregiver becomes unable to continue with caregiving responsibilities. Caregivers are susceptible to depression, illness, physical exhaustion and emotional exhaustion...continued

Sharing Wisdom - Caregiver Tips

Janice from Woodside,  NY
I recently joined a caregiverís support group and Iím glad I did. I hear other peopleís stories about their loved ones whom they care for. I feel that Mom was always there for me emotionally and I am returning the gift back to her. Support groups and sharing, or even just listening, are a big help. Peace.

From Cathy in Toronto
I resolved to create more high energy blocks of time for myself. When I have planned and arranged for a few hours of free time, I want to arrive rested enough to do something interesting and soulful for myself.  I don't want to use those precious hours to just go rest because I am too tired to do otherwise.
