Fearless
Thank you for all of the heartfelt responses
to last week’s column. One thing that comes through loud and
clear in all your comments is that things are better when we
are well informed about the programs and services of importance
to us and our loved ones. I always talk about the challenges
of what I call “malinformation.” In other words, the
presumptions we make based on the things we think we understand
but in reality our perception is not only wrong but also
unjustifiably negative. Hospice is a topic that traditionally
fits within this category. The first response below clearly
defines one of the reasons for being malinformed about things of
great importance to us –fear. It is only when we educate
ourselves about those things we fear as family caregivers will
the system work at its best for us and our loved ones. By the
way, I hope you saw the report last night by Bob Woodruff, the
ABC anchorperson who was badly injured in Iraq last year. It
was riveting.
Responses to last week’s article:
Again I write to thank you for a delightful
article. I have worked with Hospice of the Rapidan for over 11
years now and what thrilled to see your article about hospice
this month…Continued
I am touched that you wrote to well about
your parents’ friends – you too will grieve their loss, and have
been grieving the progressive illness too ...Continued
I just wanted to express my gratitude to the
Vitas organization in Houston. They were the Hospice
responsible for my husband during his last days. They were
kind, helpful and continued to care for me after his death. ..Continued
P.S. We are looking to talk with caregivers
who are presently going through dramatic family changes that
have impacted their working career. They would have to agree to
tell their story on television.
Email us if you are
interested.

Carenotes |
My sister has colon cancer
and she has severe arthritis
in both hips so she can't
walk. Her hips have to be
replaced but that cannot be
dome until her chemotherapy
treatments are over with.
But first her colon has to
be reattached. In the
meantime I'm taking care of
her 24/7. I don't mind at
all, she's my sister but I
cannot go to work. She needs
me home with her because she
needs help going to the
bathroom, sitting down,
standing up, and laying in
bed. She needs me to take
her to her chemo treatments
every week, her numerous
doctor visits, and all the
tests that the doctors want
her to have. All this takes
up at least two to three
days every week so I can't
hold on to a job.
I'm trying to find work
online but I haven't been
successful at finding much
of anything. I sell things
on Ebay and Half.com to try
to make ends meet but it's a
real struggle.
She's on SSI and Medicaid so
she gets some money in each
month and thank goodness
Medicaid pays for her health
problems. Recently I had to
go on Medicaid also. I've
applied for Temporary
Assistance and get some food
stamps and health care but
no money so far. I've
applied for SSI since I
worked for almost 20 years
and have problems with my
knees and can't walk up and
down steps. I can barely
walk to get my sister in the
ambulette to take her to her
appointments. So far nothing
has happened with SSI except
for my Case Manager who
accused me of not paying my
taxes. I've used up my IRA
and have paid literally
thousands of dollars in
taxes because I withdrew it
early.
I don't know what to do. Why
is it such a problem for the
government to help me out? I
was born here, lived here,
worked here and paid my
taxes but now when I need
help, help is no where to be
found.
Any suggestions or ideas?
